Even a simple four-letter word like ‘bear’ is complicated. It’s more than a large animal with thick fur and long claws, isn’t it?

Yes, and that’s why English can be so difficult. We also say, “I can’t bear it any longer,” “Her son bears a strong resemblance to his father,” or “Bear to the left at the stoplight.” And none of these meanings has anything to do with a large furry animal.
