?`s and ANNEswers

I have an old textbook I picked up at the second hand book store, titled Eighteenth Century English Literature, by Tillotson, Fussell and Waingrow. Periodically, but without any pattern I can discern, there will appear, in poems and the like, a small superscript circle after a word. What does this mark mean?

Truthfully, Leo, I do not know what your superscript circle means. I Googled the phrase and found about 500,000 references to it; among them was a comment that this symbol was used many years ago (which corroborates the information you provided) as a specific accent mark. Perhaps you might go to Google and research it for both of us.
