Both “in” and “of” are prepositions, but I would use “in” in the way you’ve written the sentence.

I have an old textbook I picked up at the second hand book store, titled Eighteenth Century English Literature, by Tillotson, Fussell and Waingrow. Periodically, but without any pattern I can discern, there will appear, in poems and the like, a small superscript circle after a word. What does this mark mean?
