This rule falls into the punctuation category; and it states, “When the last word in a sentence is abbreviated, one period will suffice.” A.M. is an abbreviated form for ante meridian, so it needs only one period if it falls at the end of a sentence. The same might apply to Esq., etc., or A.S.A.P.
