Which is more correct when referring to several means of communication?. The media are OR The media is

Media is the plural of the noun medium; as such, it has traditionally taken a plural verb. This means, The media are . . . is correct. However, as time has passed, there are those who feel that when we are referring to communications media it is acceptable to use the singular. So, those people might say, “The media is not anti-business.” Personally, I’m a purist and feel the plural noun is more appropriate, regardless of whether the media are or are not anti-business.
