In So CA the phrase ‘on the yard’ is in use. When I say ‘in the yard’ I am corrected. I am told New Yorkers say ‘on line’ which is wrong.

However, one stands on an imaginary line , but gets into line. NY’ers understand that.

I cannot ever see a usage for ‘on the yard’ as correct. will let them know that too.

My dictionary has 49 ways to use the little word ‘on,’ but none of them includes ‘on the yard.’ Therefore, I presume it is a local colloquialism, one that your sister and her friends are quite attached to.
