Why is it incorrect to say, “I’m mad at you?”

‘Mad’ actually means to be insane, deranged, or demented. By extension, the first definition for ‘madness’ is the state of insanity. Other definitions include “extremely foolish behavior” and “frenzied or chaotic activity.” (Merriam-Webster Dictionary). When you have strong negative feelings, what you mean to say is, “I’m angry with you.”
