When exactly do you use the word ‘but’ in a sentence or use the comma before but?

‘But’ is a conjunction. It joins things together. In the sentence, “I am sad but hopeful” but joins sad and hopeful without a comma. The comma is used when but joins two equal thoughts that could be individual sentences. For example, “I went to the store, but I couldn’t find a dress for the party.”
